In medical terms, cataract is defined as a condition that develops in the eye lens. Though cataract is curable, to the poverty stricken people of Bangladesh, it means a lot of suffering. They define it as a cloud of black lens that overshadows their life, make them paralyzed and turn them into burden for their family. A cataract treatment requires a lump sum of money which is beyond the reach of these people. The result; Most of them remain untreated carrying the burden of blindness with them throughout their life. From the day their eyes become victims of cataract, their contact with nature is disrupted as they are deprived of witnessing the beauties of nature. We, at Touching Souls International understand their problem and that is why this non-profit organization has undertaken an eye development project for them. The project is known as‘Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project’.
Since the inception of this project, this non-profit organization had successfully completed 978 free of cost cataract surgeries along with lens implant in many Districts of Bangladesh. But what matters more to us is their smile of joy getting back their lost vision.
Without eyes, humans are not only vision less but get alienated from their surroundings. The all pervasive darkness seems to draw a line in their life which they feel they are forbidden to cross. With a successful cataract surgery, they get an opportunity to live their lives once again. Their fear driven minds go fearless; the joy of witnessing the beauty around them makes them content. Now they are no different than any other person like a boy next door who goes to school regularly, or the man who carries her daughter to school on a cycle.
