October 4th ,2009- Touching Souls International Giving Fellowship to train doctor in palliative care from abroad

 

Touching Souls International is providing the fellowship for a doctor in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh for a six weeks certification course in palliative care from Calikut, Kerala, India.  Palliative care is all about looking after people with illness that cannot be cured, relieving their suffering and supporting them through difficult times.  Palliative care is an approach which improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and treatment of pain and other psychosocial and spiritual problemsÖ.(WHO), provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms, affirms life and regards dying as a normal process, offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death, offers support system to help the family cope during the patientís illness.

Palliative care is in its infancy in Bangladesh, both conceptually and in its practice. Very few services are available to the needy .Only six doctors are certified in palliative care in Bangladesh.  Touching Souls Internationalís goal is to train more doctors and nurses in palliative care, so they can give services in palliative care for the patients in need.
